Today I share with you 5 Secrets to Becoming Mentally Strong. This is obviously not an exhaustive list however they can help you get in the right direction. You have seen people who bounce back quickly from the worst blows that life throws at them while on the other hand, there are those who never manage to get back on their feet. I guess you would want to be the former, but that means you need a good amount of mental strength. 

1. Practice Self- Reflection

Everyone, in both their personal and professional lives, will face challenges and disappointments. People who are mentally robust, on the other hand, are able to keep control of their sentiments and not let their emotions get the best of them. This allows them to avoid doing things that may come back to haunt them in the long run.

Spend some quality time by yourself and get to know who you truly are as a person, apart from the relationships or circumstances in your life that define you in some way. Develop the practice of keeping a notebook in which you can record all of your open and honest thoughts and emotions as you go through each day. And to really get a clear picture of what your values, beliefs, ambitions, and priorities are, ask yourself profoundly and thought-provoking questions (such as “What is my dream in life?”, “What is my happiest memory?”, “What are my strengths and weaknesses?”). You’ll be better equipped to make significant choices and get a deeper insight into who you are as a person as a result of this.

This also means evaluating your core beliefs. We’ve all formed essential convictions about ourselves, our lives, and the world at large. Our core beliefs evolve throughout time and are heavily influenced by our past experiences. Whether or not you are conscious of your core beliefs, they have an impact on your ideas, behaviour, and emotions. Core beliefs can be erroneous and counterproductive at times. For example, if you believe you’ll never achieve in life, you may be less likely to apply for new employment, and you may accidentally portray yourself poorly during job interviews. As a result, your essential beliefs could become self-fulfilling. Determine and assess your essential beliefs. Look for black-and-white convictions, then look for exceptions to the rule.

There are very few things that are “always” or “never” true in life. Core belief modification involves deliberate effort and hard work, yet it has the potential to transform your life.

2. Expend Your Mental Energy Wisely

The mental energy required to ruminate on events over which one has no control quickly depletes. The longer you dwell on unfavorable circumstances that are beyond your control, the less energy you will have leftover for activities that require creative thought and expression.

For instance, it is counterproductive to do nothing but sit about and fret about the upcoming weather. Your anxiety won’t stop a massive storm from coming your way, so try not to let it consume you. You have the option, though, to get yourself ready for it. Keep your attention on the things that are solely under your control. You should save your mental energy for beneficial activities, such as finding solutions to issues or establishing objectives.

When you find that your thoughts are not leading anywhere useful, it is important to make a concerted effort to redirect your mental energy toward subjects that will be of more assistance to you. The more you engage in the exercise, the more judicious use of your mental energy will become second nature to you.

3. Replace Negativity With Productive Thoughts

Even though most of us don’t spend much time thinking about our thoughts, it’s important to be aware of the patterns of thinking that contribute to your level of resilience since they may be changed. Exaggerated and negative ideas, such as “I can never do anything perfectly,” prevent you from realising your full potential and holding you back from achieving your goals. Try to get a handle on your negative ideas before they get out of hand and start to affect the way you behave. Find the overwhelmingly negative thoughts you’ve been having and replace them with thoughts that are more useful.

Thoughts that are productive don’t have to be too optimistic, but they do need to be grounded in reality. A notion such as “I have some faults, but I also have plenty of strengths” is a more balanced way of thinking about oneself. Changing your beliefs is a process that requires continual monitoring, but it can be very helpful in guiding you toward being the best version of yourself.

This also means that you need to stop seeking validation from people. Because when we give too much weight to what other people think of us and allow their perspectives and judgments to govern our lives rather than our own, we become needy, insecure, and dependent on other people’s approval. Always seeking validation from other people is the same as buying into the belief that someone else’s pleasure matters more than our own, and it prevents us from living as freely, cheerfully, and truthfully as we should be able to. Therefore, you should stop trying to make other people happy and instead live your life in the way that you and only you deem appropriate.

4. Practice Tolerating Discomfort

Simply because you have a strong mind does not indicate that you are emotionally numb.

In point of fact, having a strong mind requires you to have a heightened awareness of your feelings so that you may select the course of action that is most appropriate given the circumstances. Accepting your sentiments without allowing them to dominate your behavior is an essential component of mental toughness.

To be mentally strong, one must also be aware of the circumstances in which it is rational to act in a manner that is at odds with one’s feelings. Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone is one way to continue to challenge oneself. For instance, if you suffer from anxiety that keeps you from trying new things or accepting new possibilities, you should try doing so if you want to continue to push yourself to your limits. It takes experience to be able to tolerate uncomfortable feelings, but as your self-confidence rises, it becomes easier to do so.

Carry out your daily activities in the manner of the person you aspire to be. Choose to act in a more outgoing manner, regardless of whether you feel like it, rather than wishing you could say something like, “I wish I could be more outgoing”. Tolerating some level of discomfort is often necessary in order to achieve bigger gains, and doing so will help you get your vision closer to becoming a reality, one baby step at a time.

5. Stay Motivated

You should always be prepared to face obstacles since they will always be present. No matter how far you’ve gone, how much progress you think you’ve made, or how good you think you’ve gotten, life will always present you with new difficulties and difficulties to overcome. For the simple reason that this is the way things are, the happy times and achievements are accompanied by challenges and difficulties. Therefore, rather than grumbling, complaining, and feeling angry about every setback or inconvenience you meet, why don’t you look at them instead as opportunities for you to grow, learn, and change for the better? In any case, there is always something to gain from experience, even if it ends in failure.

One way to do this is to reflect on your progress daily. The hectic nature of the modern world makes it difficult to set aside significant amounts of time for contemplation and solitude. Make time in your schedule to evaluate how far you’ve come in terms of improving your mental toughness. Ask yourself at the conclusion of each day what you’ve discovered about your thoughts, feelings, and actions that you’ve gained from that day. Think about the things you want to get better at or accomplished the next day. Strengthening one’s mental capabilities is an ongoing process.

There is never a point where there is no opportunity for advancement, even if sometimes this endeavor would appear more challenging than other times. Thinking back on how far you’ve come can help you feel more confident in your capacity to achieve success according to your own terms while still maintaining the integrity of your ideals.

We have a tendency to get caught up in our preconceptions of how things should be or how we want them to be rather than embracing them for what they are. However, it is critical that we learn to let go. That we learn to be content even when things don’t always go our way. There are instances when we want things that aren’t meant for us. People we care about can outgrow us or slip away from us. Change is unavoidable in life, and the sooner we stop fighting it, the better off we will be.
